WHAT IS THE SENATE YOU MAY ASK?
The Senate is the highest governing body on all academic matters and as such it directly impacts your daily life as a student at UBC. However, much of the activities of the Senate are distant to the large majority of the student population and yet its decisions affect our academic experience at UBC on a daily basis.
The Senate has the following responsibilities:
- Determine admission and exam policy
- Hear student appeals in matters of academic discipline, academic standing and admissions
- Approve, recommend and revise courses
- Provide and grant degrees
- Recommend the creation of faculties, departments, courses and scholarships
- Advise and assist the president in University budget matters
- Make recommendations to the Board of Governors.
- Student representatives comprise 17 of the 85 Senate members. In addition to attending Senate meetings, they sit on a variety of University committees that oversee the above matters.
